How and when did someone who is genetically pre-disposed to mal-de-mer, and to being a bit of a scaredy-cat adventurer, set out on a 44 foot sailboat? Perhaps it was because of my early experiences. Early on in our relationship, I speared another boat at full speed in a Laser. Left a bit of a hole.
Before I knew what one was, we took a JY-15 out during a small craft advisory and we got lost finding the right inlet home. A few years later, in beautiful BVI we ran into the Christmas Winds. My laser turtled in a small squall and I waited out the shore support, sitting on the flipped boat. So perhaps you should turn to Jason’s bio for the sailing experiences that brought us to this spot. Joking aside, I have had a great time sailing Vanguard-15s with Jason and have recently been out on the bigger boats and am looking forward to a lot more.
My family, coming from Cape Town, always spent lots of time in and around the water. Whether it was beach vacations or just the local town pool, my summers were consumed by water. I have always had a bit of that traveling bug as well. I like reading about new places and experiencing different cultures, especially trying new types of food. So while Jason has always talked about sailing in distant waters. I have always thought about spending my life traveling. I have been fortunate enough to visit lots of countries in the past.
I also like getting outside and exploring via bike or foot and will try most sports at least once. For me, getting on the boat means having the time and opportunity to do all of these things at a relaxed pace. Geting off the boat for an adventure run is my idea of a great day. If I weren’t getting on a boat, I would be getting on a plane or a train to reach all of these places and do all of these things. Another thing that has always been part of my life is books. With a mother trained as a librarian, it must have just been a natural hobby to pick up. My dream of days on the boat of course includes many hours reading in distant harbors. Probably the last thing you should know about me is I love tinkering, whether it is taking apart computers or trying to figure out why our doors are popping out of their hinges. I keep a collection of old laptops around, just in case I need to take something apart. I know I’ll be regretting ever saying this when we can’t figure out how to get something to work on the boat, but I don’t mind having to manage our own little city on the boat either.
I think I’ll enjoy many things about this adventure and my one requirement is:
