What is an EPIRB? How do you dial 911 when you are mid-ocean? Cell phones don’t work. Message in a bottle seems a bit slow. The answer is an EPIRB (emergency position-indicating radio beacon). It has only one switch and when you turn it to the MAYDAY position it starts getting you help. Step one: it uses the onboard GPS to figure out where you are. Step two: it sends your location and name to one of many satellites floating in space, along with the […]

Choosing our GPS tracker
The fun part of preparing for our launch is choosing all of the technology for the boat. It certainly feels like too much of a good thing. Visualize an ice cream fan being forced to finish the entire ice cream bar in the cafeteria. We usually over-research gadgets for months before making our decisions on the perfect running watch or the ideal speakerphone. But the pace of the boat does not allow for such for deliberation, or, is it over-analysis? Today we need to decide on what […]
Boat Building Photos
A few more photos were sent to us from Argentina today. Progress! We are eager to see the interior, which is a major time sink. Hull #42 is ahead of us on the wiring and other interior work, but we are ahead on the cosmetics on the outside. Here are some definitions of nautical terms used in the photo titles. PORT Port is left but a port left open is a window and any port works in a storm. RAIL Boats have rub rails and toe rails. […]

A decision is made, maybe?
The crucial offshore sailing gear decision is almost completed and it will be an Epson. Yes, we are getting an Epson printer and now are equipped to cross the seven seas. A scanner / printer is key when dealing with paperwork in foreign ports. On decisions probably more critical to the performance of a blue water cruiser I have barely turned my head away from the crossword puzzle, but the $79 printer decision has become an odyssey. The first set back was when we discovered that the printer space […]

You Can See an Antares from Space
As a child I was told that the only man made object you can see from space is the Great Wall of China. I was misinformed. I now have photographic evidence that you can also see an Antares. Using recently released former cold war technology, I have acquired photos from space which clearly show an Antares. These photos are openly available from Bing maps. Prepare to be blown away. This photo below is of the yacht basin and the YCA (Yacht Club de Argentino). Having lunch […]

Gail’s Trip to BA is Postponed
Gail is packed for a factory trip but has postponed her flights. She packed 2 crates, 1 long box for poles (fishing and man-overboard), and 1 duffel. The duffel is heavy and has the density of a dead body but I have been told it contains fishing gear, day mark signals and our ensign. I am the reason for Gail’s postponement. I have been on the road for work for 4 out of the last 5 weeks. (Singapore, India, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Germany, France, and twice to UK ). Instead […]

Build Progress Update
Factory friends sent us a few photos on the progress of the building of Two Fish. I will cede the 1,000 words to the photos. The big steps are done. The deck and the rear stairs are attached to the hull. Before the deck was put on, all of the large items needed to be installed. The engines, heads, water tanks and settees are too large to be brought into the boat through the door. Now that the deck is installed, if any of these items need to […]

Sea-batical
Yesterday was a big day. I was nervous because after 17 years, I was flying to London to ask my bosses to take some time off. The office is not a university where sabbaticals are the norm. This is akin to taking a year off from playing in the NFL. Pessimists might say it’s like going to the prison warden and asking to live outside the walls for nine months. But the bosses were sympathetic and granted the wish so I have 9 months off, starting in June and ending […]
